I adopted my dog from the SB City Shelter ("shelter") and she almost died. We don't live in a third world country and should not allow man's best friend to be treated in this manner. The shelter is inhumane.

If you have an experience you are willing to share about the shelter, with facts that can be validated, please forward your information to the Coalition for Shelter Pets. Our email address is humane1sb@hotmail.com
This is not a personal vendetta so please keep to the facts. We are the Coalition for Shelter Pets and we are concerned with the welfare of animals in public shelters all over the U.S.
Feel free to cross post our message on your favorite rescue boards.

How come every time I ask for help from somebody who has something to say against what I am doing, I never get a response. One Who Knows, I never heard back from you. I am working very hard to try to make the shelter a better place. You can't possibly be ok with the way the shelter is now...? So, help me!

I'm reading all these comments and ask a question, "what is your solutions?" It's a losing battle trying to get the funds necessary to correct this situation. No, I don't like what I see at this shelter any more than anyone else does, but I have been in enough shelters to know that this is standard fair at the majority and is actually the Plaza compared to many. The administrator can't make money appeared out of the blue, he is totally dependent on the elected nutss. And guess who elects them, we do, you and me. That is why we have the power and should not condemn When you start condemning a shelter to the public then you drive away potential homes for the shelter animals. People don't come running to take these animals out of this "bad" situation, a man doesn't want his kids to see "barrels of dead animals". And it cannot be corrected overnite as some self proclaimed guru of no kill wants people to believe. It takes slow, steady, consistent work to make these changes and most people only talk the talk, they don't want to walk the walk.

One who knows, I see that you spend a lot of time attacking the Rancho shelter, which I really don't understand. I used to work there, as well, and that place is infinitely better than SB has ever been. No, the Rancho shelter is not perfect by any means, but I did see animals getting the treatment that they need. The SB shelter can provide little or no treatment because they just can't afford it. You seem to have a personal beef with this no kill guy...is that keeping you focused on Rancho? We really need a person of your knowledge to help with the SB shelter. Our current strategies are to prepare a project (a visual tour) of the shelter and meet with the city council people. We intend to speak to the public, as well. You say we shouldn't condemn the shelter because that will only drive away adoptions. This is ridiculous! We should just sugarcoat what is going on there so that it can continue to be a dump where animals continually die from disease, and at times, exposure to the elements?! And if they make it that long, and are not adopted/rescued, they die in the back and are dumped in the barrel. We don't intend to go around showing the public barrels of dead animals. We want to expose the conditions that shelter animals are forced to live in. At this point, a good number of the animals that are adopted from this place come back sick for euthanasia because the average person doesn't want to put money into a sick animal. So, the adoption rate is pretty much negated by the fact that they are coming back to the shelter sick. I feel that maybe you have tried to change the SB shelter in the past without any results...? We sure could use some advice. My offer is still open to email us at humane1sb@hotmail.com.

Also, if you can please list specifically the shelters that are worse than SB City, I would appreciate that because I am interested in going to see them myself. Thank you.

Here is my question - Since SB does not seem to have any money to run/improve/fix this shelter AND it really is a hell-hole, why has the City not shut it down? Shut the place down and contract out for those services. As far as Ken goes, he should be the first to go and he will be. The City Manager and the Mayor's office will cry foul and blame the entire mess on Ken. So goes the politics of public officials. Good bye Ken.

volunteer: Why don't you start your own rescue ? Changes do not happen over night. If you no longer work there or volunteer, how do you know what is going on really? You have too many inconsistancies to be a credible witness about any thing. There must be FACTS not second hand stories.

Wallflower: This stuff has been happening there for years; in fact, I have had many employees that have worked at the shelter for years that tell me that the shelter has actually IMPROVED from what it was before! Where are my inconsistencies? Tell me! I will clarify anything that you have questions about. I know that shelter like the back of my hand. I can put a blindfold on and lead you anywhere you want to go...that is the truth. I put hours, upon hours, of my own time into that place. Go ahead and go over and ask the shelter people yourself! They may not be fond of me anymore (regardless of the fact that I am not trying to attack them), but they certainly can't deny that I put my heart and soul into that place. So, don't you tell me that I need to get my facts straight! Who are you anyway? Have you ever been to that shelter? You go there and tell me what YOU see! Get the d**n facts for yourself! If you want to speak about this one-on-one, you can email me at humane1sb@hotmail.com. I will send you photos of the condition of the shelter including personal accounts that will set you head straight. Don't test me on this one...I know what I am talking about. I wish I could transfer all of the images and feelings from my head into yours that resulted from the pain and suffering I saw there! Contact me...really...you need to.

BTW, how do I know that things haven't changed there, you ask? Well, you said it yourself: Changes do not happen over night. The last time I was there was December 5, 2007. That is a little over a month! Do you really think much has changed in that time? You say I should start my own rescue...well, my dear, that takes money and that is something that I don't have. See, on top of trying to change the shelter for the better, I am also going to school, taking care of my own pets, and planning a wedding (to get a little personal). I foster dog after dog; we haven't been without a foster in our house for almost two years now! If you want to help with the movement, then please contact me. Otherwise, please don't bother me with these ignorant little comments that reveal that you have given absolutely no thought to this thread.

The shelter needs to be demolished due to its deplorable condition. The animals are suffering atrocities seen only in poor countries. How can we, as civilized human beings, allow the suffering to continue? At the very least, a grass roots effort to fight for our animal friends is necessary. Shelter animals are grateful for life. Stand up for the animals at the San Bernardino Animal Shelter. Get involved and together we WILL end their suffering.

The SB City shelter is a disaster, I agree with that. And yes, I tried for several years to help with changes but it is the City officials that keep it the way it is. The previous director, Cicirelli, stated in Ad Hoc meetings that he didn't know of one spay/neuter program that works. He was given a good reference for a cushy job in San Jose WHILE HE WAS ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE for "fooling" around with the female employees. Such is the type of elected officials in the City of SB. If you want to complain please make sure that the elected officials know that you are blaming them and not the director or employees of the shelter, THAT IS KEY!! Shelters can only do what they are given to do with and that is the case here. Keep in mind that we need to support the JPA that is before the City. This is a joint venture to build a state of the art shelter for the City of SB and the County of SB and their contract cities. This is all important to bring about the changes for the better.

One who knows: Thank you so, so much for your feedback. Your insight is very helpful and is much appreciated. Fortunately, your information basically agrees with my plan of action. It is something that I definitely need to hear. This "good fight" is very overwhelming at times, but I will not let it deter me. I have many supportive people helping me and I know that we can make a difference. I miss being at that shelter more than anything else and still have dreams about being there. I love that place as much as I hate it. I considered the employees my friends and it depresses me to think that they think bad of me. I just know that I couldn't live with myself if I walked away without giving everything that I've got to get the SB City animal housing situation to an acceptable standard. Thanks again!

One Who Knows...or anybody else that knows for that matter: Where can I get info on the JPA that was discussed earlier? I am having a hard time locating info on the internet. Do you have anything on it that would help me out? If so, can you please send it to humane1sb@hotmail.com? Thanks!
