**In response to a story in the San Bernardino Sun regarding improvements to the City Shelter**
Life made a little easier Posted: 01/18/2009 11:19:59 PM PST
San Bernardino is out of the dog house now that much-needed improvements have been completed at the city-run animal shelter. Conditions at the aging pound led to a public outcry in 2008 which, thankfully, turned into real action. With the financial backing of the San Bernardino City Professional Firefighters Union and a generous anonymous donor, the shelter recently was outfitted with overhead heaters to keep puppies warm and upgrades to the air-conditioning system were completed.
Last year, the city impounded, fed and cared for more than 18,700 animals, about 2,500 more than the previous year. Economic realities - namely, the home foreclosure and unemployment rates - may force even more pet owners to give up their animals in weeks and months ahead.
On behalf of them, we thank those who made these improvements possible.

This is good news indeed. And I like that Ken Childress is not trying to white wash anything, he says it the way it is. It's a step definitely in the right direction. Too bad the economy sucks right now, it will have an effect on all shelters with their budgets. I expect it to get worse before it gets better. Keep up the good work, I know you have been working for awhile to get some attention.
